The half-mens stands on the rocky slopes of the Richtersveld, a single thick stem rising to four meters, crowned with a tuft of leaves that always seems to lean north. The Nama tell it this way: long ago, when conflict drove their people south out of Namibia into this harsh country, the grief of leaving home was more than some could bear, and they were turned into these trees, fixed forever on the hillside, gazing back across the river toward the land they lost. To stand among the half-mens at dawn, all of them tilted the same way, is to understand why a desert this severe can still feel like a place of mourning and memory.
