Agios Thomas, Boeotia: Introduction

It is the last witness to a village that vanished six centuries ago, when plague and war emptied the lowlands of Boeotia and scattered its people into the hills. Walk the plowed ground around that 12th-century chapel and the surface still glitters with broken pottery - the everyday debris of farmers who lived, prayed, and died here between the 11th and 14th centuries. Modern Agios Thomas grew up nearby, but its roots run all the way down into that older, abandoned world.
