It is what the rest of the Netherlands calls the eastern tip of Gelderland, tucked against the German border, far enough from Amsterdam that the trains slow down and the accent thickens. People who live here say the name with affection. It signals what the region is and what it is not: not the Randstad, not the famous tulip fields, not crowded. The Achterhoek is the Netherlands' quiet corner, and the locals have built a culture around the fact that nobody is in a particular hurry to leave it.
