2025 Tainan–Chiayi Earthquake: Introduction

The earthquake struck Dongshan District, in the hills north of Tainan City, near the border with Chiayi County. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration measured it at magnitude 6.4; the U.S. Geological Survey recorded 6.0. By either measure, it was strong enough to jolt tens of thousands of households awake, strong enough to collapse walls and crack foundations, strong enough to leave 50 people injured before dawn.
