Built in 1907, the church had survived more than a century of Caribbean storms. It did not survive the seventeen seconds that began at 8:29 a.m. on August 14, 2021. The facade collapsed inward, killing seventeen people where they knelt. Twenty miles away in Toirac, outside Les Cayes, twenty more died when St. Famille du Toirac church came down during a funeral. Across southern Haiti's Tiburon Peninsula, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was tearing apart a country that had barely begun to recover from its last catastrophe.]]></description>
