Long before the matches mattered, the world heard South Africa 2010 as a vast, droning hum, the noise of a million plastic vuvuzelas blown in stadiums from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Commentators complained; broadcasters tried to filter it out; nobody could stop it. It was the soundtrack of the first FIFA World Cup ever staged on the African continent, a tournament South Africa had been told, more than once, it could not pull off. From 11 June to 11 July 2010, across ten stadiums in nine cities, it pulled it off anyway.]]></description>
