The magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck 45 kilometers west-northwest of the city, deep within the mantle of the descending Australian plate along the Sunda megathrust -- the same volatile boundary that had unleashed the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami five years earlier. By the time the shaking stopped, Padang's residents were running into streets choked with dust, broken water mains flooding the roadways, and fires spreading through collapsed neighborhoods. The final count would reach 1,115 dead, with more than 2,900 injured.]]></description>
