2008 Universal Studios Fire: Introduction

A fire on June 1, 2008, had destroyed three acres of the Universal backlot, including the King Kong attraction and some video archives. Universal president Ron Meyer told reporters that 'nothing irreplaceable was lost.' The company had duplicates of everything. Then, in June 2019, a New York Times Magazine investigation revealed what the studio had concealed: Building 6197, a warehouse adjoining King Kong, had housed one of the largest collections of original master recordings in the music industry. Decades of irreplaceable audio history had burned.
