That was the kind of thing that did not happen. The Wuppertal Schwebebahn had been swinging above the Wupper since 1901 - through two world wars, through the firebombing of the valley in 1943, through ninety-eight years and tens of millions of passenger journeys - without a single fatal accident. It was advertised, sometimes facetiously and sometimes not, as the safest railway in the world. The dispatcher hung up, embarrassed at her own laughter, and dispatched everything she had.
