On December 8, 1987, the players and coaching staff of Alianza Lima boarded a Peruvian Navy Fokker F27-400M at Pucallpa's airport, still riding the high of a 1-0 victory over Deportivo Pucallpa that had placed them at the top of the league table. The club had not won a national title since 1978, and with only a few matches remaining, the dream felt closer than it had in nearly a decade. Seven miles from Jorge Chavez International Airport near Callao, the aircraft plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Of the 43 people on board, only the pilot survived.
