1981 Irian Jaya Earthquake: Introduction

The epicenter was in the Papuan highlands, in what was then called Irian Jaya, and the ground itself was not the thing that killed people. The earthquake - magnitude 6.7, moderate by the standards of Indonesian seismology - shook loose whole slopes of saturated mountainside. In the dark, under heavy rain, the landslides slid into the valleys below. More than 305 people were confirmed dead. More than 1,000 were missing and never found. Entire villages were buried.
