They were wives and kids of American servicemen stationed in occupied Germany, heading home on a transatlantic route that had become almost routine in the year since the war ended. On October 3, 1946, at 5:03 in the morning, their aircraft struck a ridge seven miles beyond the runway at Stephenville, Newfoundland. All 39 people on board died. It was the deadliest crash in Newfoundland's history at that time, and it happened because the pilots flew straight when they should have turned right.]]></description>
