In Perth, nearly 3,200 kilometers to the southeast, people heard what they thought was distant cannon fire. On the island of Rodrigues, off the coast of Mauritius, 4,800 kilometers across the Indian Ocean, a police chief filed a report noting "the distant roar of heavy guns." None of them knew what had happened. At 10:02 on the morning of August 27, 1883, the volcanic island of Krakatoa, sitting in the narrow Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, had produced the loudest sound in recorded history. The pressure wave from the blast circled the planet three and a half times over the next five days, registering on barographs as far away as London. Within hours, the telegraphs began to carry the news -- and for the first time in human history, the entire world learned of a catastrophe almost as it unfolded.
