Nobody yet understood that a mountain on the island of Sumbawa was tearing itself apart. On April 10, 1815, Mount Tambora erupted with a force that would earn it the highest volcanic explosivity rating of any eruption in recorded human history -- VEI-7 -- and its consequences would ripple outward for years, killing tens of thousands and rewriting the climate of the entire planet.]]></description>
