The crew, dumbfounded, found themselves able to walk from their stranded vessel to shore across the exposed riverbed. They barely had time to comprehend what they were seeing before the tsunami arrived. It was December 27, 1722, and an earthquake estimated between magnitude 6.5 and 7.8 had just torn through the Algarve. The tremors were violent enough to set church bells ringing in Tavira, Faro, and Loule without anyone touching them -- the ground itself tolling a warning that came too late.
